Whether it is ranching, farming, or hunting, I’m usually getting dusted up in some manner in the countryside. All that being said, I have a strong appreciation for a good quality side-by-side. They not only make my life easier, but they are a hoot to use! Before I jettisoned this machine out into a cornfield, there are a multitude of attributes to admire or account for on this unit. From the bumper to the tailpipe, let’s walk through some of the more notable elements you may want to familiarize yourself with.
Tires
For the Can-Am 2026 Defender XT HD11, you have XPS Trail King 2 front tires (29” x 9/11” x 14”) that are then paired with identical XPS Trail King 2 rear tires (29” x 9/11” x 14”). The wheels housing said tires are going to be 14” cast-aluminum. This gives you a strong supportive base to be working from whether you are pounding pavement, dusting up dirt roads, and adventuring across a hay field.
Seating
Something I’ve grown to appreciate in my middle-age self over the years is comfortable and generous seating. I’m not a “lone wolf” laborer or rancher. I’m always enlisting the help of my wife and son, or my father. So, if we are going to fly off on some squirrelly side quests - hayrack has a blown tire that needs replacing or the batteries in ½ of our trail cameras are dead - I need room for accomplices companions to get the job done.
Digital Display
Something else that I grew to love are gauges or a digital display so I can always account for how much gas I have left, engine temp, compass direction, and speed (nobody wants a speeding ticket on a county road). So, the 4 ½” wide digital display with keypad as well as the 10 ¼” touchscreen display are nice 21st century accoutrements to have.
Up in the Saddle & On the Trails - Can-Am 2026 Defender XT HD11
Well, now that the parking lot walk-through is complete. How did this unit perform out in the wild?... To not bury the lead any longer, this is a great machine and its performance shown through every time I put it out in the field.
Winch
A winch is an add-on accessory that everybody feels like they need to have simply for the cool-factor, but if you use them on a semi-routine basis, you’ll understand that not all winches are made equal. The 2026 Defender XT HD11 sports a 4,500 Lb (2,041 kg) winch with a synthetic cable, which makes it quite strong out in the field. While I never pushed this winch to its limits of 4,500 Lb, I did drag a few logs out of the way while clearing trails to hunting stands and this winch made light work of that.
Suspension
When people discuss suspension, it typically invokes thoughts of flying off of gnarly jumps in the desert or flying 60 MPH down a maintained trail. What I had in mind was significantly more mundane yet equally important.
When riding around with my father, I was very grateful for the quality suspension this unit has because he has had countless back surgeries and doesn’t want to feel every rock we traverse in our forests and fields. Additionally, my wife is pregnant and I have a 1 ½ year old son. So, neither of them wants to be tossed like a Caesar salad while going for a leisurely ride to the back 40. So, the suspension was clutch to say the least:

Brakes
Whether I am braking for some whitetail deer running in front of me or I need to throw it in park to chainsaw some limbs obstructing my path, the brakes are more important than most people realize. While torque and acceleration are sexy, your ability to brake is paramount as well.

Power & Acceleration
Speaking of things that are sexy, the power and acceleration on the Can-Am 2026 Defender XT HD11 is something worth talking about. With a 2,500 Lb towing capacity 2,500 lb and a 1,500 Lb payload capacity, this side-by-side is built for work. Additionally, with 95 horsepower and multiple modes of use (Sport, Work, and Normal), you are never left wishing you had more.
Ground Clearance
The dimensions of this unit are quite large for a short box, 3-seater at 129.8” long by 65” wide and 81” high, but that also adds to its stability. Moreover, the ground clearance is a hefty 14”. So, if you are cruising along at a good clip and don’t notice a rock or log, you’re likely going to drive right over it and will never take any damage.
Storage
In terms of storage or cargo carrying, the box on the 2026 Defender XT HD11 might appear modest, but it’s capable of carrying more than you think. I routinely would toss my Milwaukee chainsaw in the back for clearing brush as well as other tools, and I never really felt short on space. So, it might be small in appearance, but it outperforms its size when in action.
Handling
It might come across as incredibly unsurprising at this point, but the handling of the 2026 Defender XT HD11 is terrific. With power steering as a factory option (High torque Tri‑Mode Dynamic Power Steering - DPS) and other factors like Driving Assistance CVT engine braking, Sport/Normal/Work modes that we already covered and a speed limiter for monotonous work like farming/ranching, the handling and feel are smooth and easy to wield.
Pros & Cons - Can-Am 2026 Defender XT HD11
Pros
- Winch - It’s more than a “cool guy” toy; it’s a safety net and reassurance you can get out of sticky situations
- Skid Plate - The last thing any of us want is a rock or branch to puncture important components of the engine and leave you stranded
- Comfort - The seats can comfortably fit 3 people; this matters a lot
- Smooth Ride - It’s not cool to feel every bump in the road; nobody wants to spill their coffee
- Capable - Between horsepower, towing, speed, and acceleration, this machine is flatly capable of whatever you need to get done
Cons
- Mesh Doors - In MN, it is routinely 90°F in the summer and -40°F in the winter; spring for the upgrade of an enclosed cab
- Warranty - I’m not trying to knock Can-Am with this one, but with only a 1-year factory warranty, I’d suggest upgrading your warranty for additional years because life happens
Final Thoughts Before You Hit the Trail
So, what are my final thoughts on the new Can-Am 2026 Defender XT HD11 in a Dusty Navy colorway?... At its base price of $22,699, I believe this unit is worth it if you’re looking to make an investment in a side-by-side. Can-Am supports their owners with a bevy of upgrades, and I would definitely spring for a longer warranty, an enclosed cab, and other small features that would simply jazz this model up and make it my own.
My only significant gripe was the mesh doors because my home state of Minnesota has such weather extremes. We go straight from a winter polar vortex that lasts 6 months, skip spring, and have near 100°F days with no reprieve. So, having an enclosed cab where you can hide from the heat or cold in between chores might be a luxury, but I would definitely pay for that luxury.
