Riding 150 Feet Underground: Exploring Mines and Meadows ATV Resort
If you’re an off-road enthusiast looking for a trail system that offers something completely outside the ordinary, Mines and Meadows ATV and RV Resort in Wampum, Pennsylvania needs to be on your bucket list. Spanning nearly 1,000 acres in Western Pennsylvania, this park combines miles of groomed trails with rich local history—and a main attraction you won't find anywhere else on the planet.
Nearly 1,000 Acres & 80+ Miles of Trails
First opened in November 2006, Mines and Meadows has grown into a premier destination for riders from all across the country. The park features over 80 miles of trails that wind through dense Pennsylvania woods, rock crawls, mud sections, and open powerline corridors.
One of the standout perks of riding here is trail management:
- Single-Direction Flow: The majority of trails are one-way, meaning you can focus on navigating the terrain without constantly worrying about oncoming traffic around tight corners.
- Year-Round Grooming: The staff actively maintains the grounds, keeping trails in top shape through every season.
- Varied Skill Levels: From flat, easy access paths to slick mud pits and off-camber rock crawls, riders can push their comfort zone as far as they like.
Ride Under the Earth: The Abandoned Limestone Mine
The crown jewel of the resort is its famous mine tour. Guided tours take riders a 150 feet underground and a half-mile deep into an abandoned limestone mine.
Plunging into total darkness with only your machine's headlights illuminating the cavern walls makes for a surreal, thrilling ride. It’s an experience that sets Mines and Meadows apart from almost every other off-road park in North America.
Rent or Bring Your Own Machine
Don't have your own rig? No problem. Mines and Meadows is an official Destination Yamaha partner, offering a fleet of late-model, low-mileage ATVs and Side-by-Sides available for rent on guided tours.
For this trip, we tackled the park on a Yamaha Kodiak 450 ATV; a nimble, midsize machine that handled trail chop, deep puddles, and tight woods with ease. Meanwhile, the crew followed along in a powerful Yamaha Wolverine RMAX 1000 X4.
Plan Your Trip
Whether you want to drop in for a day ride or stay the weekend, Mines and Meadows offers two distinct campgrounds:
- Primitive Camping: Ideal for tent campers and those who prefer a rustic setup.
- RV Camping: Complete with hookups for full-sized rigs and trailers.
- Guided Experience: Guided tours even come with lunch provided, making for a smooth, hassle-free day on the trail.
