Don't buy, clutch bushing problem
By Maurice Williams (I am an Owner) on Dec 03, 2020Machine has 1149kms on it and the bushing in the secondary clutch failed which then destroyed the belt. Machine is two months out of warranty. Arctic Cat doesn't supply the bushing as a separate item. have to replace the clutch assy, a $900.00 part. Dealer didn't have an Arctic Cat belt (back ... ordered). do yourself a favor and look at something else.

Terrible machine
By Alec (I am an Owner) on Aug 15, 2020Save your money do not buy!!!!! So this machine has given me nothing but issues since about 50 miles. It's now been over 2 years and the machine only has 480 miles on it basically due to the fact that it always has an issue. At about 50 miles Onhad to have the entire wiring harness replaced which ... arctic cat only agreed to pay half of, shortly after the belt shredded and the clutch went. After that was all fixed it shredded another belt with in 100 miles, then another one. It seemed as thought everything was going to fine on this last belt but it just recently snapped while my wife was riding the machine and the clutch completely blew AGAIN. I've always been a big fan or arctic cat, I have their sleds and love them! But I cannot get behind these alterra. I have spent basically the same amount of money that I sent on the machine on repairs. I wouldn't advise buying this unless you plan on never riding it. Terrible terrible machine.

Good ATV, best bang for your buck
By Foggy67 (I am an Owner) on Apr 18, 2020Well balanced atv. The engine has more than enough power due to the light weight. The ride is very plush, there is no need of power steering. Only drawbacks: bodyroll at high speed in tight corners and lack of storage onboard. In Europe this atv isn't sold anymore from 2019 because Textron retired ... from the market.

I just got done with a hunting trip in West Virginia up the mountains for 8 days up an down to the stand on one tank of gas power out the wazoo! The rear Independent suspension is very smooth. ... But watch the hill sides like to lean much like the Yamaha 700 does. Only thing I dont like about it is the breaks sweak from the time I bought it so does my brothers!!! 2nd artic cat buyer

Clutch Problems
By Jeremy O (I am an Owner) on Nov 15, 2019I had no complaints about my 2018 Alterra 500 until I had about 600 miles on it, six months after I bought it. I had only driven in about six miles on a hot day (95F) when, at 40-45MPH, it just up and stopped moving. The engine still ran, but I couldn't engage any gear.
When I took ... it to the shop, the V-belt was completely shredded (it literally looked like burnt yarn) and the clutch rollers and slides were melted. The shop said it was probably due to excessive heat, which seemed suspicious. I had barely ridden it that day and I received no indicator light suggesting it was too hot.
$475 in repairs later, I had only driven in ten miles, on level ground, on a warm day (83F), when the same thing happened! When the shop called Textron about it, they said there's a defect in a clutch bushing. Textron warranteed out the part, but not the labor, so I had to pay out an additional $325 for the labor and another V-belt. It took Textron THREE MONTHS to send me the replacement clutch! Total costs: $800!
Since then, I've driven it about 35 miles in cool/cold (10F-50F) weather and the V-belt has held (as it should!). IMO, this is a manufacturer's defect and a recall should be issued. If you're getting up to 500 miles or so, you may want to remove the cover and check the belt for excessive wear.
I am going to sell my Alterra 500 as soon as it's paid off and will NEVER buy another Textron! Image is from the first repair billing statement.

Good bang for the buck
By Tom D (I am an Owner) on Jun 13, 2018This is a mighty mid size ATV, very nimble plenty power out of the Kimco 443cc engine and handles great with its lower CG. Im 6'3" 225 lb guy and bought this ATV for my wife (I own a 2017 Suzuki 750axi) and I tell you im having lost of fun on the trails with this ATV, its a little bumpy and revs ... a tad bit higher than my king quad but that's comparing apples and oranges (2 different classes) all and all I love it, got 100 miles on it and first service done. I hear good rep about these Kimco engines and I can tell that the crankcase (bottom end) is just as big as the one on my 750 so it should be pretty bullet proof, the axles and diffs also look pretty beefy, decent factory tires and super super plush seat, rear independed suspension, and at $5999 CAD this was a no brainer purchase.

First quad at 67.
By Wilmer Bierer (I am an Owner) on May 19, 2018I bought it to go over my property and hunt Morel mushrooms in the spring and hunt deer ' in the fall.
I like it a lot. Lots of power and goes great in my very rugged woods. I also plan to plow my 600 driveway. I got a winch of course for the plow and if I need it Ill have it to get ... me out of a tight place. I have Parkinsons Disease. My shoulders both need replaced but do the Parkinsons I not a good candidate for the surgery. I talked to my good friend Lou at McAdoo ATVS near Indiana Pennsylvania. Hes going to fix me up with EPS so I dont have any trouble with my shoulders.

By Paul M. Werley (I am an Owner) on Apr 05, 2018Have only owned this 500 for two weeks, so far very pleased with it. handles great and has more than enough power. Will use mostly for hunting and some trail riding. Sure it will do what I need it for. Seems very well built.
