Taiwanese Manufacturer Access Motors To Sell ATVs In USA
A new competitor will soon be selling four-wheelers and side-by-side vehicles alongside the stalwarts of the field, or at least that's what we can speculate from the news that Access Motors has submitted the paperwork to the USA's Consumer Product Safety Commission. The brand filed an "ATV Action Plan," which in turn means they are seeking permission to import, distribute, and subsequently sell their quads and UTVs stateside.
Founded around 20 years ago in Taiwan, Access Motors isn't a brand familiar to those of us most familiar with the likes of Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, and the likes. That isn't to say their products aren't up to snuff, but they haven't had the distribution access that these other major manufacturers have enjoyed for the last few decades, even though Access' ATVs have been available in Europe for a few years now.
Access Motors has made a big push over the last few years to build out its lineup into one that can be competitive with the aforementioned brands, and in some cases, offer models that the famous companies don't. This includes the two versions of the SP450 sport quad, one with the suspension and tires you'd expect from a sport ATV, and another with a street-focused setup including lower suspension and road-worthy tires. Power is from a 449cc single-cylinder engine good for 44 horsepower, and the quad weighs 476 pounds. Sounds like a good time.
Above the SP450 are utility 4x4s that will be sold with either a 608cc or a 781cc engine, as well as in both short and long wheelbase iterations. These powerplants are single-cylinder units, and all versions of selectable four-wheel-drive. Power is 44 horsepower for the 608 and 60 for the 781. Respectable numbers, albeit not groundbreaking. There are also a few other machines in Access Motor's portfolio, but the documents don't say whether these will also be offered in the USA.
The reality of any of this happening-- not to mention the price point at which the Access Motors vehicles will land-- are anybody's guess. Stay tuned.
