Ever been out riding with friends and family and have to stop every few miles to talk to everyone so that everyone knows where you’re going? More than likely, everyone who has ever hit the trails with someone else has done this. It can even be hard to talk to the person sitting next to you when you’re both wearing helmets and trying to talk over the sound of the engine. The best option for communications is the Cardo Packtalk Edge ORV system for your helmet.

The Edge

Cardo Systems is the leader in motorcycle, ORV, and snowmobile communications tools. The PackTalk Edge helmet systems have revolutionized how riders stay in communication with each other, giving you a way to have direct radio communications with other PackTalk users. Via Bluetooth, you can also connect your phone to take calls, or listen to music through the JBL speakers developed specifically for the Cardo System platform.

The Cardo PackTalk Edge ORV mounts to the exterior of your helmet. You then have the JBL speakers, which mount inside your helmet under the liner. The speakers are held in place with adhesive-backed Velcro, making the speakers easily removable so you can clean your helmet after a muddy ride. There is a microphone, and Cardo gives you two different options. One option being a small microphone that uses the same adhesive Velcro strip to attach where you want it on your helmet's chin bar. The other option is a microphone that mounts further back on the helmet and gives you a flexible unit that you can position wherever you want it. This option is also perfect for open-face helmets. Don’t worry, both microphone options have a windscreen to protect you from hearing nothing but the sound of wind. Both the speakers and microphone have a wire that comes out the bottom of your helmet and connects to the mounting plate for the Edge unit.

The Cardo Packtalk Edge ORV attaches to the mounting plate with Cardo’s patented Air Mount magnetic system. The magnets secure the Edge into the mounting plate and are strong enough to keep it there, even in the event of a crash. It makes removing the Edge easier for recharging and cleaning. The Edge is simple to use. It has Natural Voice Operation, meaning you just talk to communicate. There’s no pushing buttons or commands that need to be used. You just talk and the Cardo does the rest.

Designed for off-roaders and the conditions they face, the PackTalk Edge ORV unit is IP67 certified waterproof, the highest rating for any unit like this. It means that you can just ride and not worry about rain, mud, dust, or other elements. The Cardo will keep working.

Group Work

With the Cardo PackTalk Edge ORV, you can connect to up to 15 other units, so you can go on big group rides and be in contact with everyone. In fact, Cardo recently announced that in 2025 it will release a software update that will allow Edge ORV users the ability to connect to up to 30 other helmets. The best part is, it takes less than five seconds to set up the connections, And if you’re listening to music on your Cardo, you’re not sharing with your friends and can still talk freely with them.

Have a group member that uses another brand? No worries, as the Cardo can seamlessly connect with other brands and include them in your communication. It simply analyzes the radio frequency being used and adjusts. You have a one-mile radius of connection, too.

The PackTalk Edge ORV uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone and the side button lets you accept calls with ease, letting you keep your eyes on the trail. A volume control lets you adjust how loud everything is through the JBL speakers.

Does It Work?

Yes, and very well, too. It is a great tool for families that go on rides together. Whether you’re all on ATVs, or sitting next to each other in a Side-by-Side, you can talk and communicate without having to shout over the engine, wind and other noise. And, you can all listen to music if you want, and no one has to compromise over the song choice, which is a major blessing if you have teenagers. We have been using Cardo Systems Packtalk Edge ORV for some time and it is perfect for staying in contact. It also works well for riding alone, as you can easily connect to your phone and enjoy your music while you explore. Battery life is amazing, and recharging is fast.

If you happen to own more than one helmet, you can purchase a second helmet kit, which lets you move the PackTalk Edge ORV from one helmet to another.

The Cardo PackTalk Edge ORV comes as a single unit, or in Cardo’s DUO packs with two units. Each unit comes with all the hardware to mount the unit to a helmet. If you’re looking for the toughest, yet most sophisticated communications system for your off-road adventures, give yourself the Edge.
