The 2025 UTV racing season got off to a roaring start last weekend at King of the Hammers (KOH) in Johnson Valley, California. At the sixth annual Desert Challenge, Brock Heger of RZR Factory Racing picked up right where he left off, dominating the field for his second consecutive win at the event. Driving a Polaris RZR Pro R Factory, Heger claimed the overall UTV victory in the UTV Open class during the Limited Race.
"It's incredible to come back to our home turf after competing overseas at the Dakar Rally and secure another win,” said Heger. “We qualified well, which allowed us to get to the front early and run our own race. Dakar is about preservation over two weeks, whereas this event is an all-out sprint. Regardless of the strategy, my RZR Pro R Factory always delivers. The vehicle's incredible power made today's victory possible. It was also a great day for Polaris, with our drivers securing the top four positions. Next up is the rock race, which will be a big opportunity for us to put our Polaris back on top. We have qualifying on Monday and racing on Thursday, so I'm excited to get back out there."
Heger wasn’t alone in making the podium a Polaris party. Doug Mittag and Dallas Gonzalez secured second and third in modified RZR Pro Rs, with teammate Max Eddy Jr. finishing just outside the top three in fourth. In total, Polaris racers snagged nine of the top ten spots, leaving little room for competitors to breathe.
The four-lap race through the rugged Johnson Valley terrain saw Heger start in second after qualifying. That didn’t last long—he charged to the front early, led every lap, and crossed the finish line over three minutes ahead of the competition. Heger’s performance showcased his skill and the capability of the RZR Pro R Factory, a machine built to handle the punishing demands of desert racing.
"What an incredible day for Polaris and the RZR Pro R," said Alex Scheuerell, RZR Factory Racing Technical Director. "Continuing our dominance from last season and Dakar is truly gratifying for everyone involved. Brock continues to impress us with his exceptional racing expertise—to tackle the two-week challenge in Saudi Arabia and then come here and excel in a full sprint is mind-blowing. Securing nine of the top ten positions, with outstanding performances from RZR Factory Racing drivers, as well as Doug [Mittag], Dallas [Gonzalez], Wayne and Kristin [Matlock], Mikey [Kelly] and CJ [Greaves], underscores why the Pro R platform is the premier side-by-side in the industry."
RZR Factory Racing Technical Director Alex Scheuerell also praised the team’s efforts. “Brock’s ability to go from a grueling two-week race in Saudi Arabia to excelling here in a sprint is just incredible. And to see nine Polaris drivers in the top ten shows what the Pro R platform is capable of. It’s been a fantastic start to the season.”
In other news from the event, Polaris announced that the RZR Pro R Factory is now available for purchase. Billed as a race-ready platform straight from the factory, this machine is designed to give serious racers the same tools used to win at events like KOH and the Dakar Rally. It’s the first OEM-produced race UTV, blending competition-proven performance with technology tailored for desert racing.
But the week isn’t over for RZR Factory Racing. Heger and teammate Bryce Menzies will switch gears for Thursday’s UTV Hammers Championship Rock Race, where they’ll pilot modified Gen 1 RZR Pro R Factory machines. With reinforced components, custom-tuned suspension, and a winch for navigating obstacles like the infamous Chocolate Thunder, the team aims to keep Polaris at the top of the leaderboard.
