Off-Road Trails: Maryland

Two great riding areas nestled into one of the country's smaller states

go back

Compared to the western states in America, Maryland is relatively compact. This small size doesn't afford much free space in the way of off-road riding parks, but there are several within the state that makes the most of the available land. These areas ensure that you can still get out and make memories with your family and friends.

Both of these riding areas offer camping opportunities either at the riding area or relatively close to it. Both of these locations are on the west side of the state - venturing to both should be fun and relatively easy.

Garrett Trail System

With multiple trails within this system, which runs the Garrett State Forest, the Garrett Trail System is an ideal place to take your off-road vehicle on a family adventure in the summer months. Hardwood forests make up the dramatic scenery in this area, and the staging area is right at the trail system to offer easy access. Camping opportunities are not right along the trails, but they can be found at the nearby Swallow Falls State Park. The nearby town of Oakland has all of the essentials for your stay, including food, supplies, and gasoline for your adventures. Be sure to come with family or friends, as this beginner-friendly area can be enjoyed by everybody.

St. John's Rock ORV Trail

A relatively new trail in the state of Maryland, St. John's Rock ORV Trail is tailor made for off-road enthusiasts. There is an off-road trail on the park that measures approximately 12 miles long. Next to the eight-site campground, there is a good size rock garden that is available for 4x4 vehicles to tackle if drivers want a good challenge. Keep in mind, you must reserve a spot to ride this area and/or camp before you come here. If you need supplies, Frostburg has all of the supplies that you need for your family fun trail adventures.

Wolf Den Run Park

The state of Maryland purchased the Wolf Den Run park, which was a private off-road park, and turned it into a public off-road facility. It has roughly 40 miles of wooded trails as well as a motocross track that isn’t regularly maintained. There are a few deep mud holes on the property that are there for the muddin’ and some steeper, rocky hill climbs. A state off-road permit is required for entry, but that is about it for regulations. The state of Maryland created a few primitive campsites on the property, and they do require a reservation and a permit that is to be purchased before you go.
